Toys for your little one can get costly and lets face it, they play with their toys for a few weeks and they're over it. Or they're more interested in the box, right?
I've been wanting to make Baby A a magnetic felt board for a long time so finally a few days ago I went to Walmart and grabbed everything I needed, and then some. It wasn't until I got home that I realized that felt sticks to felt, so buying the magnets was a total waste of $1.97, but oh well. Before I set off to the store I wrote out a list of the fruits and veggies that I wanted to make for Baby A so I would know what colors of felt to grab. From start to finish the project took around 3 1/2 - 4 hours, but during the project I was also running around chasing Baby A and helping Mr. Hunky take care of things before he left for work. Overall I had a lot of fun with this project and Baby A loves it, so the time spent was more than worth it!
What You Need:
-1 Cookie Sheet or Round Metal Pizza Pan
-Felt in an Assortment of Colors
-Spray Adhesive
-Paper
-Pencil
-Scissors
-Hot Glue Gun
Start by spraying spray adhesive on your cookie sheet or round pizza pan and adding as many sheets of felt to it as needed to cover the front. You may need to get creative and add pieces of felt to edges that did not get fully covered.
Trim around the edges leaving approximately an inch of felt around the edges. Once you are finished trimming the edges, spray your spray adhesive around the edges of your cookie sheet or pizza pan and press the remaining felt edges down until they adhere to the pan.
You'll want to give the spray adhesive time to dry, so set it aside while you spend some time drawing and cutting your fruit and veggie stencils. I know you're probably cringing right now, trust me, I'm HORRIBLE at drawing, but I managed to do my best (thanks to the help of the book Eating the Alphabet) and my fruits and veggies turned out decent!
For Baby A's felt board I decided to make him strawberries, grapes, a carrot, an eggplant, an orange, an apple, broccoli, a potato, a banana, a chili pepper, a lemon, and a potato. I used the stencils and cut out my fruits and veggies with felt. I made separate stencils for each of the fruit/veggie stems and I used a sharpie to add the extra small details such as the dots on the strawberries and the line on the banana.
Using a round pizza pan was a lot of fun because it resembles a plate, especially if you cover it with white felt! At Walmart I was able to score the pizza pan for only $0.92 and the felt was about $0.23 a sheet! You and your little one will have a ton of fun learning about colors, fruits, and vegetables, and you will feel so good knowing that you made it happen for your child!

ReplyDeleteGood job on your fruit! Can't wait to try this for my son. I love making him stuff!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cute idea! We're getting a play kitchen for our daughter for Christmas, and this would be a perfect alternative to plastic play food.
